Well, the Memorial Day barbeques have come and gone, America celebrated yet another birthday (the big 2-4-2, ow!), and before we know it, we’ll be rounding August. But don’t be fooled: there’s still plenty of hot summer weather to go around, which means you still need to know the best places to cool off with an icy adult beverage (of the yeasty variety). After all, we’re inside another work week, so I know you’ve got happy hour on the brain. Here’s what I suggest:
Ardent Craft Ales
This 2018 Elby Award winner was named brewery of the year by the Richmond region’s dining awards and only just celebrated its fourth birthday in June. Need I say more? Okay, okay, well, here are some other good tidbits: Ardent boasts a full menu of original brews in addition to a sizable collection of collaborations; its large, amply-shaded beer garden backs right up to ZZQ’s patio; and if you’re not in the mood to bring your pulled pork sammie over to enjoy with your beer (although you can), Ardent cycles through a roster of food trucks every week.
Väsen Brewing Company
If you’re looking to indulge your Thirsty Thursday urge, Väsen is the place to be. Geeks Who Drink hosts trivia every Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at this Scandinavian-inspired tasting room. And if you’re not in the mood to pair your guesses and beverages with grub from whatever food truck is parked outside for the evening, walk next door to the new Stella’s Grocery location and grab a panini or shish kebab to go.
Three Notch’d Brewing
While Three Notch’d is a Charlottesville native, it’s made itself at home in Richmond, serving flagships, limited releases, and locally inspired brews (oh, my!). The beloved Virginia brewery is another hot spot for trivia (on Wednesdays), but you’ll also enjoy any of its other weeknightly offers, including Scott’s Addition Night on Mondays, when patrons can swing by for draft specials until 9 p.m.
… So? Have you opened a tab yet?
